Smart factory – Connectivity Enhanced Vehicle Production

Steve Bell, Principal Analyst – Connectivity, Wards Intelligence

Automotive OEMs are either retooling their factories or making plans to retool their factories with connectivity as a central feature. As OEMs move away from the production of ICE to electric or hybrid vehicles the factories need to be not only retooled but rethought as flexibility and adaptability become more significant success factors than scale.

Working on EV systems and architectures that are rapidly evolving means that traditional approaches to minimize vehicle production costs may not be appropriate. Low-cost sources of power in addition to availability of workforces with appropriate skills can mean moving factories from traditional regions to new greenfield shovel ready locations.

The opportunity to combine greenfield sites with the promise of 4G/5G private networks to deliver sustainable, flexible and cost-effective manufacturing is high on the priority list of many OEMs. Especially since great connectivity is an essential capability to exploit the benefits of AI, robotics, AR, cloud computing, digital twinning, 3D printing and automation.

Against this background we conducted a connectivity survey in the first half of 2021 to understand how the industry was approaching factory connectivity, what is important  and who was influencing the direction. The presentation will address some of the results from an upcoming report.

9:10 am – 9:40 am

The Future of Sensors and Cabin Monitoring in the Software Defined Cockpit

Drew Winter, Senior Analyst – Cockpit of the Future, Wards Intelligence

Connecting the latest sensing technology with automakers’ all-new electronic vehicle architectures is creating a wave of new opportunities to enhance vehicle connectivity and cockpit features.

The evolution of electrical and electronic architectures from independent, distributed systems to centralized computing platforms with cloud-computing capabilities, sensors, and actuators, will redefine the cockpit and reduce costs.

Enhanced interfaces will include touch, haptics, gesture, voice, eye, face, fingerprint recognition and other features. These capabilities will enable vehicles to become true “digital companions,” just like our current mobile devices.

Among the topics we’ll explore:

– When will camera-based driver- and occupant-monitoring systems be integrated with biometrics and other sensors to create immersive user experiences and wellness features in mainstream vehicles?

– What will be the biggest challenge for cabin monitoring in shared and commercial vehicles in the next five years?

– “Digital luxury” and “the subservient interior” are two of the hottest industry buzzwords. What do they mean?

– A look at a revolutionary sensing technology that could totally disrupt how we look at in-vehicle sensing.

Haig Stoddard, Senior Industry Analyst Wards Intelligence

Haig Stoddard, Principal Forecaster, Forecast & Analytics, Wards Intelligence will review the current North America sales and production outlooks for 2022, as well as summarize the impact of the ongoing global supply chain disruptions, spurred mostly by the shortage of microchips. The presentation also will dwell deeper into answering questions related to the timing of when the industry can get production and inventory in sync with strong demand and how well each major manufacturer is handling the supply-chain disruptions.

11:00 am – 11:40 am

The New and Used Vehicle Market: What are the Questions?

Paul D. McCarthy Ph.D., Director, McCarthy Analytic Consulting

Paul McCarthy’s presentation provides an economist’s perspective on demand, supply, and the connection between new and used vehicles gleaned from over 25 years of modeling at Ford and Ford Credit. He will make a case for an alternative perspective on leasing and used vehicle price dynamics, and highlight the importance of financing conditions on vehicle demand. His overall framework will help in understanding recent developments, while also shedding light on how the market may evolve with the rollout of electric vehicles.
